Nestled in the heart of Riverport, our Community Centre is a cherished gathering place with a rich history. Built over a century ago, the building first served the community as a schoolhouse until the 1950s. Some local accounts suggest it may also have been used for other community purposes in its early years. Since its transformation into a Community Centre in the late 1960s, it has been a hub of activity, connection, and support for the residents of Riverport and the surrounding area.
As a charitable organization, the Riverport and District Community Centre is dedicated to providing a welcoming space for all. Today, it hosts a variety of groups and activities, including community dinners, socials, a book club, exercise classes, and the Lion’s Club.

Our Story and Folk Lore
Like many long-standing buildings in small communities, the Riverport and District Community Centre carries with it a history that blends fact and memory. While we know the building was constructed over a century ago and served as a schoolhouse until the 1950s, some longtime residents recall other roles it may have played earlier in its life.
Local stories suggest that the building may once have been known informally as the “Oxner Big House,” reflecting its proximity to what is now Oxner’s Beach. Others remember hearing that it hosted community meetings or temperance events in its early years. Though these accounts are not yet verified through records, they reflect the way the building has always been woven into the life of the village — a place where people gathered long before it officially became the Community Centre in the late 1960s. A dedicated Board of Directors team works hand in hand with residents, volunteers, and local organizations to provide services and spaces that uplift the spirit of Riverport.
